When should I book my first lactation consultation?Ideally the Prenatal stage, during the end of your second trimester. Prenatal Consultations are a great way to review medical history and individualize your feeding plan. Postpartum Stage: You should mainly consider seeing a lactation consultant if you experience pain during breastfeeding, have concerns about your baby's weight gain, need help with latch and positioning, pediatrician orders any type of supplementation or if you simply want to ensure you are breastfeeding correctly.

What services do lactation consultants provide?Lactation consultants offer services such as breastfeeding education, one-on-one consultations, assistance with latch and positioning, guidance on pumping and milk storage, and support for breastfeeding multiples or premature babies.

How long do consultations typically last?Initial consultations usually last between 60 to 90 minutes. Follow-up appointments are often shorter, around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the issues being addressed.

Do lactation consultants only help with breastfeeding?While breastfeeding support is their primary focus, lactation consultants can also provide assistance with bottle feeding, weaning, and addressing concerns related to milk supply and infant nutrition.

Are lactation consultant services covered by insurance?Coverage varies by insurance plan. I’m currently in network with United Healthcare, UMR, Tricare, Aetna, Healthnet, CHAMP-VA, Anthem Blue Cross, and Blue Cross Blue shield. Billing for Cigna members with pre-authorizations.

How can I prepare for my first consultation?Have a list of questions or concerns ready, bring any relevant medical information, and be prepared to feed your baby during the consultation so the consultant can observe and offer guidance.
